IPL Net Worth

After its 17th season ended in May, the Indian Premier League (IPL) was valued at $16.4 billion, or around Rs 1.3 lakh crore, up 6.5 percent from $15.4 billion the previous year, according to a report by independent global investment bank Houlihan Lokey.

The research has calculated the IPL’s business and brand values, emphasizing that the former is a subset of a company’s total worth and includes cash flows produced by the IPL as a stand-alone commercial entity. The increase in the IPL’s net worth has resulted in the BCCI using lucrative LED stumps that are so expensive.

The IPL net worth grew by 6.3% to $3.4 billion from $3.2 billion in 2024. This monumental rise in the tournament’s brand value has also had a huge impact on the  IPL betting activity in terms of money at stake.

Growth of IPL’s Net Worth

The league’s most recent title sponsorship agreement with Tata Group, struck earlier this year, contributed to some increase in the IPL value. The five-year deal of the IPL valuation is estimated to be worth US$60 million a year, around 50% more than the previous deal with the Indian company.

With its enormous reach, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is seen as a premium sports product for brands looking to boost their value through advertising, in addition to its record-breaking broadcast rights deals of I₹48,390 crore (US$5.79 billion) that were inked in 2022. Viacom18 announced last month that 620 million people watched over 350 billion minutes of IPL games this year on its JioCinema over-the-top (OTT) platform. The IPL net worth is now only second in the world among all the sporting tournaments.

Brand value of IPL teams in 2024 (IPL Team Prices)

With a brand worth $231 million, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is the league’s most valuable franchise. Not only has this highly consistent squad made it to the playoffs 12 times out of 15 seasons in which it has participated, but it has also won five championships. According to the report, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a former captain of CSK, has been the franchisee’s face and the main factor in the team’s success.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who also profit from the presence of superstar batsman Virat Kohli, are a close second with a $227 million brand value. “RCB had a mixed season, from a poor first half and being placed last on the league table with a less than 1 percent chance of qualifying for the playoffs to achieving a remarkable turnaround to qualify for the playoffs for the ninth time, the only team apart from CSK and Mumbai Indians to achieve this feat,” the report stated.

The league’s defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), had a fantastic season after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the championship game. In addition to exceptional players like Shreyas Iyer, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and the soon-to-be sensation Rinku Singh, KKR makes significant use of the famous owner Shah Rukh Khan’s brand equity. KKR is ranked third on the list of franchisees with a brand worth of $216 million. It is thought to be among the best-managed franchisees in terms of business, earning a profit well ahead of other franchisees.

With a brand worth $204 million, the Mumbai Indians (MI), another well-liked franchise, ranked fourth on the rankings. “MI’s brand value was impacted due to the negativity surrounding the team after a change in captaincy and its on-field performances; however, the long-term goodwill associated with the brand helped to negate the impact,” the research stated.

Regarding their brand values, three of the ten teams—the Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Delhi Capitals (DC)—are all within close range of one another. With a brand worth of $133 million, RR shot up two spots to the fifth position in the brand ranking, while SRH came in second with a brand value of $132 million.

With skipper Rishabh Pant back, Delhi Capitals came in eighth place with a $131 million brand value.

With ace player Mohammed Shami out and the Gujarat Titans (GT) leader Shubman Gill, they were unable to perform on the pitch after losing their captain to MI this season. The team was worth $124 million as a brand.

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have a brand worth $91 million, whereas the Punjab Kings (PK) have a brand value of $101 million.
