The 2016–24 IPL squads of Rishabh Pant
The blue-eyed boy of Indian domestic cricket in 2015–16 was none other than Rishabh Pant, a courageous, hard-hitting left-handed wicketkeeper–batter known for his amazing feats in age-group and domestic competitions.
Therefore, when he was acquired by the Delhi Capitals for INR 1.9 crore ahead of the 2016 season, it did not surprise those who had witnessed a teenage Pant slap the white ball carelessly. Pant had a poor start, scoring only 198 runs at a strike rate of 24.75 against 130.26 in 10 innings. But it didn’t take him long to leave his imprint on the competition.
The T20 hitter Pant reached the pinnacle of his career over the next three seasons, smashing 366 @ 26.14/165.61, 684 @ 52.61/173.60, and 488 @ 37.53/162.66 to become one of the league’s legends.
By his standards, the last three seasons have been lackluster, with 2020 and 2021 being the worst due to his struggles on the UAE’s slow and unforgiving courses.
Before the 2021 season, Pant was named DC’s captain following the retirement of regular captain Shreyas Iyer owing to a shoulder injury.
Even after Iyer returned for the second leg of the 2021 Indian Premier League, DC chose to continue with the southpaw. Delhi finished the season with a loss in both of the Qualifiers 01 and 02 under Pant. Pant was kept on as the Capitals’ captain and as a player in 2022. His batting average of 30.91/151.79 was respectable, but he struggled as captain as the Washington Redskins missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
Pant had a terrible accident on December 30, 2022, while traveling by car to his birthplace of Roorkee. He underwent numerous procedures and sustained numerous injuries as a result. Although he was unable to attend the 2023 IPL, the BCCI compensated him with INR 16 crore through an insurance firm.
Now that he is fully recovered, Pant plans to captain the Delhi Capitals during the 2024 Indian Premier League.
