However, chasing those lofty totals is something only some teams look forward to because the pressure is intense from the outset. However, there have been cases in which teams have successfully chased down large totals. Here, we’ll talk about the highest run-chases in t20 cricket.

The South African men’s cricket team holds the record for the most runs chased in T20 international matches. The West Indies scored 258/5 when batting first against South Africa in 2023 at SuperSport Park in South Africa, with Johnson Charles hitting 118 off 46 balls.

South Africa produced an outstanding batting performance, chasing down the goal in just 18.5 overs, reaching 259/4. Quinton de Kock smashed 100 runs in 44 balls for his first T20I century, while fellow opener Reeza Hendricks crushed 68 off 28 to assist his team reach the massive total. The duo put on 152 runs for the opening wicket in just 10.5 overs, scoring at a rate of 14 per over.

“It was quite special,” de Kock said of their partnership. “When I got out, Hendricks said, ‘We just did something really special, and we should be proud of what we’ve done.'” We just wanted to offer our side some optimism, so we did that”.

The match produced a record 517 runs. It featured 35 sixes, the most in a T20 international game and only two shy of the most in any T20 encounter.

Highest run-chase for India in T20 cricket

India’s highest run chase in T20 cricket occurred in 2009 against Sri Lanka. Despite the visitors’ impressive total of 206/7, India lost no time starting the chase. The explosive Virender Sehwag set the tone with a scorching 64 runs off 36 balls, while MS Dhoni provided impetus with 46 runs off 28 deliveries. However, Yuvraj Singh stole the show with a thrilling performance in which he scored 60 runs off only 25 balls. His efforts pushed the Men in Blue to a massive score of 211/4, India’s most successful run chase in T20 cricket to date.

In 2016, the Indian men’s cricket team came near to beating their record while chasing the West Indies’ 245 in Lauderhill, USA. KL Rahul scored a 47-ball century, and Rohit Sharma contributed 62 runs to help India go closer to the mark.

With two runs needed from the penultimate delivery, Dwayne Bravo dismissed MS Dhoni, keeping India at 244/4 and losing by one run. It remains India’s highest total in T20 cricket when batting second.
