India declared T20 World Cup champions in thrilling finale

As much as they loathe the phrase and claim that they do not bear the baggage of the past, it returned to haunt South Africa once more, this time on the largest platform, in their inaugural final. India pulled off an astonishing comeback near the end of the second innings, driven by Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, to defeat South Africa and win the T20 World Cup for the second time.

Rashid Khan and Naveen Ul Haq lead Afghanistan to the World Cup semifinals

Two days after defeating Australia, Afghanistan advanced to the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals with a thrilling victory over Bangladesh. After India defeated Australia in the morning game, the requirement was clear: a win would propel Afghanistan ahead of the 2021 champions. Bangladesh, on the other hand, proved to be a pain in Afghanistan’s flesh, restricting them to 115/5 in 20 overs with an outstanding bowling performance. The conditions improved slightly with rain spells, and Litton Das demonstrated batting grit, but Rashid Khan (4 for 23) and Naveen Ul Haq (4 for 26) combined to propel their team to the last four

Rohit and Kuldeep trump Head special to help India reach the semifinals

Rohit Sharma blitzed a 41-ball 92 as India defeated Australia by 24 runs in St Lucia. Travis Head was also in his element, as he was in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, but Kuldeep Yadav’s stunning spell stifled Australia’s chase when Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell departed, followed by Head.

Rashid, Buttler, and Jordan propel England into the semifinals

In a performance reminiscent of their final league game against Oman earlier in the competition, England annihilated the USA by ten wickets on Sunday (June 23) at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. Chris Jordan’s hat-trick capped a polished England bowling effort, with Adil Rashid again standing out as the duo sparked a collapse in the United States. With a net run rate enhancement in sight, as in the Oman game, England again showed no compassion as Jos Buttler controlled the chase with a 38-ball 83 to guarantee the game was finished before ten overs.

Suryakumar and Bumrah help India start Super 8s on a positive note

Suryakumar Yadav’s inventive batting and Jasprit Bumrah’s consistency with the ball helped India begin their Super 8s campaign with a polished 47-run win over Afghanistan at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. When India decided to play, they lost early wickets, but Suryakumar spearheaded the team’s recovery with a 28-ball 53 and a 60-run fifth wicket stand off only 37 balls with Hardik Pandya. Afghanistan’s total of 182 was out of reach as they were bowled out for 134, with Bumrah’s 3 for 7 off four overs supplemented by the remaining bowlers.

Gill and Avesh may return home following the Florida leg

Shubman Gill, who is currently with the Indian team as a traveling reserve, will return home after the US leg of the Indian team’s upcoming Twenty20 World Cup matches. One of the reserve pacers, most likely Avesh Khan, may also fly home following the game versus Canada in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on June 15.

Nassau County stadium to be removed in six weeks

What will happen to the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium and its tough pitches? The solution is straightforward. The Pop-Up Stadium, built in just 106 days, will take almost six weeks to remove. That work actually began on Wednesday, just after the India-USA game ended in the afternoon.

Eisenhower Park, which contained the stadium and was made into a safe fortress for the games and spectators, will be restored to its former condition, with free public access to its muddy, grassy, and dusty surfaces. The entrances, which were tightly watched and restricted for the previous two weeks, will be free going forward.

Ruthless Australia wallop Namibia to secure Super 8 berth

Australia were clinical and ruthless in their first-ever T20I match against Namibia at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. Adam Zampa went 4 for 12 as Namibia folded for a dismal 72. The 2021 winners then chased down the score in 5.4 overs to advance to the Super 8s. The defeat meant Namibia was out.

Sandeep Lamichhane will join Nepal’s World Cup squad for the Caribbean stage of their campaign after missing the first two matches in the United States. The former Nepal captain was sentenced to eight years in prison for rape before his conviction was overturned on appeal during the World Cup. Despite the efforts of the Nepal Cricket Association and several Nepal government authorities, he was denied a visa to the United States.

McMullen and Munsey help Scotland knock Oman out

Brandon McMullen’s unbeaten 61 sent Scotland to the top of the Group B standings with a seven-wicket hammering of Oman, who were the first team officially eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024. While Pratik Athavale’s solid half-century knock, aided by a 41* from Ayaan Khan in the second half, helped Oman to a competitive 150/7 on a slow Antigua track, Scotland’s top-order came out firing to make quick work of the chase, winning with 6.5 overs to spare after opener George Munsey’s rollicking cameo to set them up.

Damage control: ICC top-dresses NY pitches to reduce excessive grass veins

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is addressing significant criticism and concern over the drop-in pitches in New York for the ongoing T20 World Cup. While the ICC has stated that it will address the matter, officials privately dispute the concept that certain pitches are unsafe. It is, however, planning certain measures to ensure that the surface for the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match at Nassau County Ground on June 9 is even and fair, as well as for the remaining six games in New York.

India’s pace attack dominates Ireland on a tough New York surface

Theekshana criticises Sri Lanka’s rigorous World Cup schedule

Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana has criticized his team’s grueling World Cup schedule, calling it ‘unfair’. Sri Lanka is one of only two teams (the other being the Netherlands) that will play their four group-stage matches over four separate stadiums. It doesn’t end there: Sri Lanka’s hotel in New York, where they began their campaign against South Africa on June 3, was an hour and 40 minutes distant from the site. The Asian side has also had to contend with airline delays and long wait times at airports
