Four boundaries off Khaleel Ahmed came off the first over of the chase, two apiece for Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow. Dhawan kept getting off for fours, but the Capitals’ desired breakthrough arrived in the fourth over. Dhawan was bowled by seasoned bowler Ishant Sharma while attempting to play across the line. Prabhsimran Singh, the impact substitute for the Kings, smashed two fours in one over, one off an edge, but Ishant followed through with a ball that caught his fingertips, resulting in Bairstow being out at the non-striker’s end.

With Prabhsimran and Curran securing a strong powerplay, the Kings advanced to 60/2. They also advanced steadily against spin, unaffected by Axar or Kuldeep; nevertheless, the latter caused Prabhsimran’s collapse with a wrong’un, as the batter was unable to clear for a long time. At the midway point, the Kings’ score was 87/3, one run and one wicket higher than the Capitals’.

In the eleventh over, Jitesh Sharma fended off a stumping appeal from Sumit Kumar, who also conceded two fours. However, Pant’s deft glovework in the subsequent over saw Jitesh go out stumped off Kuldeep. The wrist-spinner, the best chance the Capitals had to take another wicket, finished his fourth over in the fourteenth over and was unlucky not to get Curran as Stubbs made a low catch at long-on. Kuldeep put up fantastic figures of 2-20, but the Capitals had to replace Ishant’s quota because the bowler was injured after bowling two overs in the early innings.

DC ultimately battles but in vain

Axar finished with 0 for 25, but the Kings batsmen defeated him when Curran reached fifty in the sixteenth over. Due to the short-handed pace assault, they maintained the upper hand and required 39 off 24, which became 28 off 18 when Livingstone hit two fours off Khaleel. By the time Marsh completed bowling the eighteenth over, it was all one-way traffic, as he conceded eighteen runs, with Livingstone and Curran each making six. But Khaleel and DC didn’t give up because the left-armer dismissed consecutive deliveries from Curran and Shashank Singh.

If Warner hadn’t dropped a catch, he could have also dismissed Harpreet Brar. However, with Livingstone hitting a six to end it, it was obvious who would win, even if Sumit had to bowl the last over.

Next stop?

The Capitals will play the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on March 28 after a four-day break. The Kings’ turnaround is shorter as they take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 25 at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
