Even before the auction, the Gujarat Titans made a bold move. Rashid Khan received the largest pay cheque because their captain, Shubman Gill, consented to be kept as the second pick. How Ashish Nehra and his staff conducted their business in Jeddah demonstrated this clarity and are looking easily the IPL’s Best Team.

It appears like Ricky Ponting and his group have done a great job of selecting a roster that will allow them to rise beyond mediocrity. With just two players left, PBKS had a sizable prize fund, but it also had a difficult task ahead of it. • Candidates for captaincy (KL Rahul and Axar Patel are both considered for leadership roles)

• Mitchell Starc, Tristan Stubbs, Faf du Plessis, Harry Brook, Dushmantha Chameera, Donnavan Ferraira, and Jake Fraser McGurk make up a strong international team.

• Backup choices (other excellent backup purchases are Sameer Rizvi, Chameera, Mohit Sharma, Faf du Plessis, and Karun Nair)

• Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, and T Natarajan constitute a strong Indian bowling team.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (7.5/10)

For losing out on top players on Day 1, RCB came under fire. They appeared to have a plan going into the auction, though, and they followed it. On paper, RCB seems dangerous because they have a strong combination of young and experienced players.

• dangerous top-order (Jacob Bethell, Rajat Patidar, Phil Salt, and Virat Kohli)

SunRisers Hyderabad filled the voids and put together a potent team after keeping a solid core of Indian and foreign players. Nonetheless, the opposing clubs would prefer to take advantage of some weaknesses in their defenses.

• Top-order explosives (Ishan Kishan, Travis Head, and Abhishek Sharma)

• Abhinav Manohar, Heinrich Klaasen, and Nitish Kumar Reddy are the local finishers and gun middle-order players.

KKR resorted to the auction to choose a captain after releasing Shreyas Iyer. But instead of going with the big names, they spent Rs 23.75 crore on Venkatesh Iyer. KKR handled it well, making some astute moves, even though it appeared that the high-profile signing would weaken their purse for the rest of the auction.

Advantages

• A solid core group of players makes up KKR.

• Fantastic spin-bowling core (Mayank Markande, Sunil Narine, and Varun Chakravarthy)

• Many all-rounders, including Moeen Ali, Rovman Powell, Narine, Ramandeep Singh, and Andre Russell

R Ashwin and Sam Curran were among the players the Super Kings brought back on a nostalgic return. After maintaining a solid core, they were not particularly active during the big sets. Given the availability of impact player rule, it is unclear if CSK’s strategy of acquiring a large number of all-rounders will be successful. Despite having a good lineup, CSK may suffer from a lack of finishing alternatives.

Advantages

• CSK’s core group is solid.

• By attempting to revert to their winning combination, CSK, a fantastic spin-bowling outfit consisting of Noor Ahmad, R Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja, strengthened their core.

Rajasthan Royals (6/10)

The Rajasthan Royals have considered altering their team’s genetic makeup. The Royals have chosen a new spin assault after losing Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin. Jofra Archer is a huge plus, and their batting core is still as strong as ever. They are lacking a few crucial components, though.

• Top and middle-order explosives

Weakness

Dependency on foreign spinners

Lack of a well-known figure in Indian fast bowling and insufficient support for finishers

Although the wicketkeeper-batsman increased the firepower, LSG was unable to find reliable bowling options abroad. Despite having a talented batting lineup, their bowling may not be up to par.

• Elite batting group.
