Six players in all may be kept by the IPL teams from their current roster. Either retention or the Right to Match (RTM) option may be used to achieve this.
The IPL franchise is free to select its mix for RTMs and Retentions. A maximum of two uncapped players and five capped players (Indian and overseas) may be included in the six retentions or RTMs.
For IPL 2025, the franchisees’ auction proceeds have been set at INR 120 crore. Match fees, incremental performance compensation, and the auction purse will now make up the whole wage cap. The overall salary cap (auction purse plus incremental performance pay) was Rs. 110 Crs in 2024; it will now be Rs. 146 Crs in 2025, Rs. 151 Crs in 2026, and Rs. 157 Crs in 2027.
For the first time in the IPL’s history, a match charge has been implemented. A match cost of INR 7.5 lakhs will be paid to each playing member, including the impact player. This will be on top of the sum he has bargained for.
For the Big Auction, all overseas players must register. The foreign player will not be able to register for the player auction the next year if he does not register.
Any player who signs up for the player auction and, after being selected, withdraws from the tournament before the season begins will be prohibited from playing in both the player auction and the tournament for two seasons.
A capped Indian player will lose their cap if they haven’t played in the starting lineup for international cricket (Test match, ODI, or Twenty20 International) in the five calendar years before the relevant season or if they don’t have a central contract with the BCCI. Only Indian players are eligible.
The 2025–2027 cycle will see the continuation of the Impact Player Regulation.
